Far from the magnificent imperial cities of Marrakesh and Fes, the backroads crisscross through the bucolic villages of the Atlas Mountains, leading to the picturesque Ounila, Dades and Draa Valleys in the southeast and heading northward to the holy city of Moulay Idriss, the Roman ruins at Volubilis, and the azure city of Chefchaouen.
The red mud brick kasbahs at Ait Benhaddou, Telouet and Skoura evoke their millennial roles as fortresses, urban quarters and palaces, as well as rest stops for weary desert travelers like the caravanserai and its palmerai at Tamnougalt in the Draa Valley.
Deep amidst the labyrinthine medinas and souqs are the elegant medersas and palaces in Marrakesh and Fes, intricately decorated with vibrant geometric motifs and swirling Islamic calligraphy.
Steep walled gorges allow access to the High Atlas Mountains which support the rustic life of the Berber villages, as near Imilchil, and the vistas of the valleys and rolling countryside at Ait Bougoumez, Azilal and the Ouzoud Falls.
