Southward from Kargil in the region of Ladakh, the road winds through picturesque villages and into the magnificent Suru Valley,
bypassing glacial river valleys and heading into the twisted sedimentary mountains surrounding the gompa at Rangdum.
The pass at PenziLa bridges the grand vistas of the Suru and Zanskar Valleys as the road continues onward to Padum
and the gompas perched on the mountainsides of the surrounding valleys.
Heading north from Leh and over the KhardongLa Pass eventually leads to the confluence of the Shyok and Nubra Rivers
which offers an expansive perspective of the two valleys, important crossroads along the ancient Silk Road in the Himalayas.
The road leading east from Leh courses through valleys along the path of ancient civilizations and gompas perched high above the valleys
and up over the ChangLa Pass before arriving at the pristine waters of PangongTso.
