Journeying to Norway is an encounter with water in the forms of mountainside cascades, narrow fjords, glacial lakes, and rivers coursing through verdant valleys and alpine tundra. A national system of scenic routes known as the Nasjonale Turistveger provides access to icefields high among the massifs of the many national parks and down to magnificent fjords. Here the road itself is the adventure as it blends seamlessly with car ferries, courses sinuously through U-shaped glacial valleys, and switchbacks on mountainsides, with the driving experience punctuated by innumerable tunnels of impressive length and engineering, including some that spiral to enable vertical travel.
The sun travels low in the late summer sky of the Western Fjords and high above the Arctic Circle to cast a luminescent golden light, however only after storm clouds and sea mist dissipate. Everywhere towns and villages attest to the vibrancy of life, especially amidst the fjords and the islands of Senja and Lofoten with its captivating red rorbuer fisherman cabins. Norway is stunning mountainscape.
