A national system of scenic routes known as the Nasjonale Turistveger provides easy access from the icefields among the massifs of the many national parks down to the stunning fjords. Here the road itself is the adventure as it blends seamlessly with car ferries, courses sinuously through U-shaped glacial valleys, and switchbacks on mountainsides, with the driving experience punctuated by innumerable tunnels of impressive length and engineering, including some that spiral to enable vertical travel.
